The art of henna: What you need to know

Henna, made from the leaves of the mehendi plant, creates a beautiful, temporary stain on your skin. Once your design is applied, it's crucial to let the paste sit until it's completely dry and starts to crack. The longer you allow it to remain on your skin, typically the darker and more vibrant your stain will be.

After at least 20 minutes from application, when the paste is thoroughly dry and cracking, you can gently pick it off. Do not rinse it with water, as this can affect the stain's quality. Initially, your skin will show a lovely orange-brown color, which will deepen to a richer brown shade by the next day. To ensure the best possible henna stain, it's important to have the area where the design will be applied clean and free of lotions or oils. If the design will be placed on an area with a lot of hair, it's highly recommended to shave it beforehand. While I can still apply henna to unshaved areas, there's a higher chance the design might appear less precise, and peeling off the dried paste could be more uncomfortable.
